Maryland oversize permits are required for vehicles or combinations that exceed legal weight, size, or load limits. These permits allow travel on public roads under specific regulations. Operators must also obtain permits from local authorities when using municipal streets.
For those who frequently transport oversized or overweight loads, two main permit types are available: Single Trip Permits and Annual or Extended Permits. Single Trip Permits are typically valid for up to five days, while Annual Permits can be issued depending on the type of load or vehicle involved.

Types of Oversize Permits

Maryland Oversize Permits Requirement:

In Maryland, an oversize/overweight permit is required for any vehicle or load that exceeds legal size and weight limitations. A permit must be obtained if your load is wider than 8 feet 6 inches, taller than 13 feet 6 inches, longer than 55 feet for single units or 65 feet for combination units, or exceeds 80,000 pounds in gross weight.

Superload Classification and Bridge Review

Maryland defines superloads as those exceeding:

  • Width: Over 16 feet
  • Height: Over 16 feet
  • Length: Over 120 feet
  • Weight: Over 150,000 pounds

Superloads require route surveys, engineering analysis, and bridge clearance reviews. This process takes longer than standard permits. A performance bond or liability insurance may be required for high-risk or infrastructure-sensitive loads.

Performance Bond / Liability Insurance

If a load is considered exceptionally heavy or poses risks to road infrastructure, Maryland may require:

  • A performance bond to cover potential road or bridge damage
  • Proof of adequate liability insurance

These are usually only required for superloads or specialty hauls that could impact public infrastructure.

No Toll Roads, Turnpikes, or Extra Fuel/Trip Permits

Maryland does not operate state-managed turnpikes or toll roads requiring special permits for oversize travel. Additionally:

  • No separate fuel permits are needed for oversize loads
  • No trip permits are required as long as you have an approved oversize/overweight permit
  • Maryland accepts IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) credentials for tax reporting

Maryland Oversize Permits have the following requirements

Operating Time: Travel is permitted from 30 minutes before sunrise until 90 minutes after sunset, Monday through Friday, and on Saturdays until noon (see restricted travel exceptions below). Additionally, starting April 1, 2013, Maryland allows nighttime travel between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM for vehicles that do not exceed 12 feet in width, 75 feet in length, 14 feet 6 inches in height, or 120,000 pounds in weight, provided the routes are not otherwise restricted. Participation in the night travel program must be specifically requested and approved in accordance with the applicable list.

Restricted Travel: Movement through toll facilities is not permitted from Friday noon until 9:00 AM Monday. This restriction also applies along the entire I-95 corridor from Baltimore to the Delaware line. On the Capital Beltway (I-495/I-95) and the Baltimore Beltway (I-695), travel for vehicles wider than 12 feet or heavier than 92,000 pounds is limited to the hours between 9:00 AM and 3:30 PM on weekdays (and until noon on Saturdays). For loads that are 14 feet wide or more, movement is only allowed between 9:00 AM and 3:30 PM on any highway, including Saturdays up until noon. Travel is not allowed on six major holidays or during associated holiday weekends (verify with the permit office).

Baltimore City: Permits issued by the State of Maryland now include access to and from the Dundalk Marine Terminal on pre-approved routes within Baltimore, provided the load does not exceed 12 feet in width, 14 feet 6 inches in height, 85 feet in length, or 120,000 pounds in weight. Any loads exceeding these dimensions, or involving other locations within Baltimore, must obtain a separate permit from Baltimore City. These city permits typically require a minimum of 24 hours for processing and routing.

Any vehicle or commodity exceeding legal size or weight including agricultural machinery, construction equipment, modular homes, tanks, girders, wind blades, and other indivisible loads needs an oversize/overweight permit. Unique Trucking Broker handles single trip, blanket, superload, and temporary fuel/trip permits statewide.

With the proper permit, Maryland will authorize widths up to 20 feet on a case by case basis (designated “superload” above 16 feet).

Approval is possible above 16 feet wide, 17 feet high, 150 feet long, or 180,000lbs, but these are treated as superloads and require route surveys, engineering analysis, and Maryland DOT approval.

Night travel is not allowed for most oversize loads. The Maryland Highway Police grant exceptions only for certain overweight only permits that remain within legal dimensions.

Anything over 8 feet 6 in wide mandates an oversize permit.

Basic overweight: $10 for the first 10,000 lb over legal, plus $1 per additional 1,000 lb (single trip).
Superload review fees and mileage surcharges apply when exceeding 120,000 lb or special bridges. Unique Trucking Broker quotes final costs up front and files the paperwork for you in minutes.

Up to 12 feet wide can usually travel without an escort, provided all other legal conditions are met.

A vehicle or load is classified as “wide” once it exceeds the statutory 8 feet 6 inches width limit.

If weighed in excess of the permitted or legal limit:

  • Up to 5,000lbs over: $100 fine.
  • Each additional 1,000lbs: roughly $100, escalating quickly.
  • Officers may require load adjustment or a permit purchase before releasing the vehicle. Repeated or extreme violations can trigger court citations and higher civil penalties.

You may apply for an oversize permit on the Unique Trucking website or by calling their permit office at 972-220-9831.
