Overweight load may move indefinitely if the permit demonstrates all other dimensions are legally compliant.

Restricted Travel: In Cook County, expressway loads are restricted to 120,000 pounds, 12’ in width, and/or 13’ 6” in height. Loads wider than 16’ may be subject to additional limitations. No travel is permitted beginning at noon the day before major holidays or holiday weekends.

Toll Highways: The maximum legal width along I-80 (next to the Indiana line) and US51 (near the Wisconsin line) is 10’, except in circumstances where up to 12’ is allowed. The price for vehicles with a gross weight between 80,001 and 104,000 pounds is around $35.00, while those weighing between 104,001 and 120,000 pounds are approximately $150.00. The maximum gross weight is 120,000 pounds. Lengths more than 100’ need prior permission and a specific permit. The height restriction is 14’ 6”, with a $15.00 fine for heights above 13’ 6”.
