Sings, Lights and flags Requirements and Additional Information in California
Sings, Lights and flags Requirements: Vehicles wider than 8′-6″, longer than 80′, or with an overhang over 10′ need signs and flags. Additionally, signs are required in situations of overweight loads. For nighttime driving, amber marker lights must be installed at the load’s front corners, with a red light on the leftmost edge, visible from the front and sides, and red lights at the rear corners, visible from the back and sides. Los Angeles County requires amber lights to be installed on all protrusions and at 5’ intervals around the whole load. If the rear overhang measures 4’ or more, at least two lights or a rear light bar are required at night. During daylight, a rear light bar is not necessary for longer loads unless the load obstructs the turn signals and brake lights.
In California, trailers longer than 48’ are not authorized unless the distance from the kingpin to the center of the rear axle exceeds 40’. Longer trailers may only be permitted if the length of the load is justified.
Additional Information: Loaded shipping containers are not authorized to have rear overhangs; however, empty containers may have a 5′ rear overhang. Shipping containers are not permitted to exceed their maximum height. Buckets and blades need no counterweight removal. Blades may be disconnected from a heavy dozer on the same trailer, but the permit must state, “blade separate and reloaded.” Tow-away permits cannot be provided without an inspection report, a Cal-Trans permit, and an inspection appointment. If the tow-away unit is unregistered, a temporary CA registration is necessary and will be issued when the permit is ordered. Four-axle tractors must have a CA inspection report or a scheduled inspection and permit appointment. Additionally, California inspections are required for single axle jeeps and boosters before permits may be issued.
